Roseville citizen and "Father of Roseville Union High School". Edwin Bedell was born in Iowa, but at the youthful age of 18 came west to California, eventually settling in the town of Roseville for almost all of his adult life. He was a agriculturist with a keen interest in almonds (Secretary of the Antelope Almond Growers Association). His social and cultural contributions to Roseville were many: organized first brass band; sponsored the first dramatic club; served as the director of Placer County Chamber of Commerce; superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School; member of the Grammar School Board of Trustees; director of the Roseville Banking and Trust Company; and perhaps best known for helping establish the local Roseville high school district which was formed in 1912. He gave an "extraordinary part of his time to the welfare of the local high school, thereby endearing himself to hundreds of teachers and students who have worked and studied at that institution." The first students met in an abandoned hotel and theater buildings, but eventually, due to efforts like those of Edwin Bedell, attended the lovely and modern Roseville High School. Mr. Bedell died of a heart attack at the age of 78 and was mourned widely by those who knew him. He had a daughter (Mrs. Ethel Reynolds of Auburn), and two sons (Fred H. of Roseville, and Albert R. of Los Angeles). His wife Mary J. (Porter) Bedell died in 1927.
