Staff Sergeant Chaplin was killed when U.S. Air Force B-29-50-MO Superfortress #44-86356 faultered on takeoff from Lajes Field, Azores, and crashed into the sea 500 yards offshore. The aircraft and it's crew were homebound to MacDill Air Force Base after serving for some extended months in England. Eighteen servicemembers perished and one survived and was rescued.

His Spouse is listed as Mary Chaplin Boylan, however Mary Ausbern Grove married HARRY PAUL CHAPLIN JR. and together they had son WILLIAM HENRY CHAPLIN. Mary later married William Montfort Boylan.
The correct Spouse for Raymond Johnson Chaplin Jr. is EDITH ARLENE HALL married in 1947 in Florida. they had one daughter Sandra Chaplin - - Raymond died at sea and Edith returned to Lexington Virginia with their daughter. Edith passed away this week. Sandra was by her side.
