Enlisted June 24, 1861 in Co. I, 5th Iowa Infantry. Wounded slightly in hip at Battle of Iuka, Ms. Sept.19, 1862. Wounded severely in right hand May 16, 1863 at Battle of Champion Hill, Ms. Transported on hospital boat "City of Memphis" and admitted May 28, 1863 to Overton hospital at Memphis, Tn. Furloughed Aug.12, 1863 and returned to his regiment Oct.9, 1863. Transferred to Invalid Corps. (Co. c, 4th V.R.C.) Feb.15, 1864. Filed for an invalid pension Aug.16, 1864 (Certificate # 58585).
