Vincent joined the Mormon Church in 1845 and was driven out of Illinois with the Mormons. He was one of the pioneers to settle in Salt Lake City where he resided for eight years. He then went to the inter-mountain region which is still known as the Shurtleff Place, and was a stock raiser and farmer. When his two oldest boys were grown to manhood they bought a mule train and hauled freight from the Missouri River to Salt Lake City until the Union Pacific Railroad was built. Vincent Shurtliff, who died Wednesday, will be buried today at 10 o'clock from the Eighth ward meeting house. The remains will be interred at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Mr. Shurtliff was one of the pioneers of Salt Lake City, having arrived here in 1847. He was born eighty years ago May 29th at Westfield, Mass. He was a prosperous farmer until four years ago when he came to Salt Lake to live. He was a Mormon and married four wives, but about twenty years ago withdrew from the Church of Latter-Day Saints and renounced all their dogmas. He was an influential factor in exposing the nefarious and obnoxious practices of Mormon ecclesiasticism. Mr. Shurtliff leaves a large family to mourn his loss.
