FUNERAL SERVICES HELD FOR
MRS. P. G. ATWOOD
Funeral services were held at the Monticello Baptist church Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock for Mrs. P. G. Atwood, beloved resident of Monticello for the past forty years, who died at noon Monday in the King's Daughter's Hospital where she had been carried for treatment the night before. Mrs. Atwood was seventy-nine years old, had been ill for five weeks with heart trouble.
Her pastor, the Rev. D. O. Horne, pastor of the Monticello Baptist church, conducted the services, paying a high tribute to the life and character of Mrs. Atwood and was assisted by the Rev. J. H. Cameron, pastor of the Monticello Methodist church. A choir sang "Asleep in Jesus."
Active pall bearers were the following nephews of Mrs. Atwood: Wyatt Atwood, Monticello; M. M. Davis, Prentiss; Broadus Atwood, Collins; Jewett Tyrone, Mt. Olive; Billy Hathorn and John William Thompson, both of Bassfield. Mrs. Atwood was buried in the Town cemetery here.
The daughter of the late John William Burkett and Susanna Burkett, Mrs. Atwood was born near Prentiss in what was then Lawrence County on July 25, 1868. Before her marriage on July 25, 1893 to P. G. Atwood, she was Miss Lula Lorraine Burkett. Their home in Monticello has been known for its gracious hospitality.
Mrs. Atwood was the mother of seven children, one little son dying in infancy. She excelled as a home-maker, wife and mother and was devoted to her family.
She united in early life with the Bethany Baptist church and had for years been a consistent member of the Monticello Baptist church.
As long as her health permitted she was an active member of the Woman's Missionary Society of the Baptist church here.
She leaves her husband; three daughters: Mrs. J. M. Drew, Monroe, La., Mrs. M. P. Simmons and Mrs. W. G. Roper of Monticello and three sons: Rosco Atwood, E. F. Atwood and J. B. Atwood, all of Monticello and six grandchildren all of Monticello, with a large number of nephews and nieces. Mrs. Atwood was the last member of her family. She died nineteen days after the death of her son-in-law, W. G. Roper, who died on January 1, 1948.
The high esteem in which Mrs. Atwood was held was shown by the large number attending her funeral services and the many beautiful floral offerings. The sympathy of friends is extended to the bereaved loved ones.
