OBITUARY Iron County Reporter May 12 1936 "R. Erickson Dies Saturday; Fire Chief 10 Years: City Will Pay Respects At Services Here Tomorrow"
The city hall will be closed tomorrow as Iron River pays its final respects to Reinhold Erickson, 43, chief of the fire department for 10 years and an employe of the city and village for 24 years.
He died about 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Bellin hospital at Green Bay from gangrene and peritonitis four days after he underwent an operation for appendicitis.
An ex-serviceman, Mr. Erickson will be given a military funeral with members of the Alfred Branchini Legion post as color guards, firing squad, and drum and bugle corps. For the fourth time in the history of the city, the fire truck will be used as a funeral carriage and will bear the coffin from the home to the church and to the cemetery.
SERVICES AT CHURCH Private services will be conducted at the Erickson home, 522 Cayuga st., at 3 p.m. tomorrow. Afterwards, the funeral rites will be held at the First Lutheran church in Iron River. The Rev. Charles W. Erickson will officiate and burial will be in Resthaven cemetery. Firemen will act as pallbearers.
Mr. Erickson left for Green Bay last Monday, believing his tonsils should be removed. At Wausaukee, Wis. he was stricken with appendicitis and underwent an emergency operation Tuesday morning. Infection followed almost immediately.
Doctors called the family Saturday morning and Mrs. Erickson was at the bedside when death came.
Mr. Erickson was born June 15, 1892 in Sweden and came to the United States in 1911. He has lived in Iron River since.
EMPLOYED BY VILLAGE Almost from the day of his arrival, Mr. Erickson was employed in the water works station and continued there for 14 years with the exception of a few months he saw service in the army. In 1926 he was transferred to the fire department and became chief a few months later.
Largely through Mr. Erickson's efforts, the city fire department was reinstated as a member of the upper Peninsula Firemen's association last year. Previously, he had held offices in the peninsula organization.
He enlisted June 27, 1918 in the army and became a corporal in Company D, 41st machine gun battalion and saw service in France. He was discharged January 28, 1919.
Mr. Erickson leaves his widow, Hulda [Hilda], four children, Hazel, Walter, Esther, and Clarence of Iron River, and two sisters, Mrs. Edward Lundin of Iron River township and Mrs. Hana Anderson of Mineral Hills, and three sisters and four brothers in Sweden.
The body was returned Saturday night to the Johns Funeral home.
