Herman Edgar Burkett, 99, of Elkton, died Thursday, March 27, 2008, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Burkett was born in Rockingham County on April 24, 1908, and was the son of the late John Edgar and Lena Sellers Burkett.

He was a member of East Point United Methodist Church on Route 602. He was a salesman for the Elkton Milling Company for 34 years. He was also a member of the Jr. O.U.A.M. No. 149, a lifetime member of the Elkton Volunteer Fire Department and a member of C.C.C. Camp.

On Dec. 24, 1930, he married Louise Hester Sipe Burkett, who preceded him in death on May 28, 1994.

Surviving family include a daughter, Betty Jane Monger and husband, James E. Monger of Elkton; two grandchildren, Bonnie Monger and husband, Larry Monger, and also James E. "Jim" Monger, Jr. and fiance, Penny Miller; three great-grandchildren, Bradley Monger, Steven Monger, and Jamie Monger; four great-great grandchildren, Jamie Monger, Branson Monger, Abigail Zimmerman, and Austin Zimmerman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton with Pastor Lewis Armentrout and Mr. Harold Smith officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends may also visit anytime at the home of his daughter, Betty Jane Monger, at 2214 Bethel Church Road in Elkton.
