THOMAS WELLS

Thomas Wells was born in Monongalia county, West Virginia, June 5, 1817, and grew to manhood in the state of his birth.

On July 4, 1839, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Lough. Four daughters were born to bless the union: Mrs. Martha Leavel and Mrs. Maria Yost of Lucas, Iowa, Mrs. Ingaby Davis of Jackson township, Clarke county, Iowa, and Mrs. Dora Chapman of Aurora, Neb., who yet survive and were all present at the close of the day that had been enjoyed in the cares and toils of life, at an advanced age of 92 years, 11 months and 27 days.

He was converted and joined the M. E. church in 1843 and lived a loyal Christian soldier until the Great Commander called him to his reward.

In 1868 he emigrated to Iowa and located in Franklin township, Clarke county, on a farm and engaged in the pursuits of farming until about 1882 when he retired from the farm and located in Woodburn, Iowa, where he and the companion of his youth could enjoy better the privileges of the church and Sunday school which was so sacred and dear to their lives.

On July 29, 1890 his wife passed on to the spirit land, leaving him, in a sense, to travel life's pathway alone, since which time he has made his home with the children, until very recently, he, getting too feeble to make the changes, permanently located with the daughter, Mrs. Yost, of Lucas.

Some years ago, he had his passport written, and made a selection of his own funeral text, which is Gal. 5: 7-8; thus it can be said that a long life has been spent in usefulness. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. S. Clark, of Chariton, from the Last Chance church of Union township, Lucas county, and interment was made in the Last Chance cemetery.

The bereaved ones have the sympathy of a large circle of friends that is numbered by those that knew him best. He leaves the four daughter, six grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren to mourn his loss.
