As a girl in 1932, Rev. Lura Johnson Grubb was pronounced dead, but she came back to life with a message that turned into a ministry lasting 64 years.
After years of pastoring, revival preaching and missionary work, Mrs. Grubb , 80, died of pancreatic cancer Thursday at Baptist Memorial Hospital East.
Her death followed an 18-month illness, according to her son, Rev. P. Thomas Grubb .
"I guess last night (Thursday) was her second and final trip to heaven," Thomas Grubb said Friday. "She was a woman of resolve. She was unwavering in her commitment to God, to her family and to the church."
For 48 years, Lura Grubb was co-pastor of Faith Temple on Trezevant. The other co-pastor was her husband, Dr. Paul N. Grubb .
She also did missionary work that took her to 49 states and 54 nations and wrote a book about a miraculous experience that saved her life and cured her of spinal meningitis in 1932.
Born and raised in Sledge, Miss., Mrs. Grubb was 17 when a doctor pronounced her dead from the disease and other illnesses.
After about 45 minutes she came back to life healed of the disease that had kept her bedridden for three years.
"She had been severely sick there for days," said Thomas Grubb , who is pastor of The First Assembly of God Church in Franklin, N.C. "Then after about 45 minutes, while they were planning her funeral, she revived.
"Later she described angels taking her upward and the walls and ceiling of the house were removed," he said. "But the angels indicated that her time was not yet and the Lord was sending her back with the message that Christ is coming soon."
The event made newspaper headlines all over the country.
The experience also inspired Lura Grubb to write a book, Living To Tell of Life Beyond Death, that has been published and distributed around the world.
She was a member of the Assemblies of God International Fellowship and also is survived by her husband, a sister, Trustine Hillhouse of Banner, Miss., and a grandchild.
Services for Mrs. Grubb will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Park Funeral Home with burial in Memorial Park.
The family requests that any memorials be sent to Faith Temple Church.
