Lavinia Brawner Speake,89, the wife of a retired Luray, Va., businessman, died Monday (02 January 1967) at Page Memorial Hospital.

She was a charter member of the John Rhodes Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Luray.

She is survived by her husband, E. Raymond Speake; two sons, Edwin R. Speake Jr. of Silver Spring and Thomas E. Speake of McLean; three daughters, Mrs. Thomas Graham of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Raymond F. Iager of Alliance, Ohio, and Mrs. J. Lawrence Meem of Charlottesville, Va.
14 Grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Sarah Lavinia's parents were John James Brawner and Emeline Haislip Brawner. She was sometimes called “Vinnie”. Vinnie was baptized. She was confirmed June 19, 1893 at Durham Church (Rev. Painter, rector) and a communicant of Old Durham. Edwin was also confirmed at this time. Sarah married Edwin Raymond Speake at Durham Church on April 9, 1901 by Rev. C.J. Wingate. Edwin Raymond Speake was born March 4, 1878. He was the son of Thomas Edwin and Cornelia Buena Vesta Claggett Speake. This family moved to Virginia after 1920.
