Robert E. Ford, age 91, died Tuesday, January 19, 2010, in Phoenix, AZ. Ford was born in Glen Karn, Ohio in 1918, to Arthur and Helen Ford.

He had two sisters, Maxine Eyster, of Indianapolis, IN, and Mary Canada (who passed away in 1992).

In 1939, Ford married the love of his life, Mildred Hartman. He then left to serve his country in World War II as part of the 566th Air Service Group for the U.S. Army from 1943-1946. Most of his time was spent in Guam, where he saw some combat as the war drew to an end.

Bob and Mildred (who passed away in 1994) had three children: Larry, of Needles, CA, Janice (who passed away in 1960) and Geri Blanchard, of Sacremento, CA.

They moved to Stockton, CA in 1948, where he began as a patrolman with the San Joaquin Sheriffs Department. Ford would often recall his first day on the job, when he was working with another officer, who also served as a deputy coroner. The two men had to respond to two separate fatal aircraft crashes in Lodi and Tracy.

Ford resigned from the San Joaquin Sheriff's Department in 1957 to take the position of Chief of the Needles Police Department. He served as Chief until 1960, when Ford was offered a unique job with a man named Bill Harrah. Ford worked as private security at Harrah's Club in Lake Tahoe and Reno. Ford did undercover work for Bill Harrah during his tenure there through 1966.

With his children raised and out on their own, Ford and his wife moved to Drain, OR in 1966. He went to work for the Drain Police Department and would retire as Chief of Police in 1977. As Ford was fond of saying, that's when he became a full-time RVer.

Once retired, Ford enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and golfing. But most of all, Ford enjoyed being with his family. He was there for the births of his four grandchildren, David, Michael, Ryan and Chelsea. He would be a special part of each one of their lives. He also lived for the births of seven great-grandchildren, Kaytlyn, Hailey, Adam, Logan, Peyton, Taylynn and Tyler.

Burial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 19, 2010 at the Park View Cemetery in Manteca, near Stockton, Calif.
