Harry Rutherford Hatch was born May 24th, 1876 on Warrenville Road in the house built by his grandfather, Luther Hatch, the first co-settler of Lisle. He farmed the 80 acres that comprised the original family homestead from his youth until the time he retired around 1948.

During his early 20's, he attended North Central College in Naperville as well as Northern Illinois State Normal School (now Northern Illinois University, DeKalb) where is brother, Luther A. Hatch was an instructor. In 1904, before graduating, both of his parents died and he returned to manage and work the family farm in Lisle. On May 8, 1912, he married Myrtle Howes, a friend of his sister who was attending teachers college at DeKalb.

At the turn of the 20th century, the Lisle Volunteer Fire department was organized and he served as secretary and treasurer for many years. Around 1910 he was also elected to the Lisle Public School Board and served in that position for over 30 years. He also served many years on the Lisle Township Election Board as judge and clerk. During World War II, he served on the local draft board and later the Lisle School Board for many years. In the early 1920's, he sold off part of the family farm to Joy Morton to form what is now a large part of the eastern half of the Morton Arboretum.

During his youth, he became interested in the history of DuPage County and Lisle, in particular, through conversations with his great uncle, James Crombie Hatch (1806-1901), who first settled Lisle with brother Luther, in 1832.

At retirement in 1948, he sold the family farm to his son Edwin Harley Hatch and he and wife Myrtle moved to Arcata, California. However, after two years they returned and settled at 4823 Stanley Ave. in Downers Grove until his death on January 11, 1963.
