ROCKLAND – Helen B. Mason, 94, died Monday, April 15, 2002, after a long illness at Knox Center for Long Term Care. Born in West Tremont, she was one of eight children of Daniel L. and Minnie Thurston Staples. She was educated in Southwest Harbor schools. After graduating from high school, she moved to Boothbay where she worked as a waitress. After her marriage to Chester E. Mason, the couple made their home in Rockland until moving to Bath in 1951. Mrs. Mason lived more than 45 years in that community and was employed several years at W.T. Grant & Company.
In later years she moved to the Homestead at St. George and for the past few years, resided at the Knox Center.
She was a member of the Rockland Congregational Church, Penobscot View Grange at Glen Cove, and the RSVP in both Bath and Rockland.
Mrs. Mason was pre-deceased by her husband in 1986 and two sons, Chester E. Jr. in 1955, and Lawrence "Duddy" Mason in 1992.
She is survived by two sons, Charles S. Mason of Lewiston, Adriel L. Mason of Mesa, Arizona; a daughter-in-law, Sylvia M. Mason of Topsham; one sister Marie Malberg of Rockland; fourteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at the Achorn Cemetery, Old County Road, Rockland. (Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins on-line)
