William Gamble, at age 18, enlisted as a Private in the 9th Mississippi Cavalry, Company I, on 30 Aug 1863 at Hickory Flat, Chambers County, Ala. The cavalry was commanded by Col. Samuel Jones, and the Company by Capt. S.A. Moses. William was not wounded nor captured and was honorably discharged at Hickory Flat on 26 Apr 1865, shortly after Lee's surrender on 9 April of that year.
