Joseph fought for Union in the civil war (80th Ohio Infantry, Co D) then married Martha Price on Jan 2, 1868. Then he migrated west in a covered wagon with brothers Thomas and David, settling in Central Illinois in an area that would come to be known as the Buckeye Prairie.

Joseph Tope Burchfield (Dec 18, 1838 - June 13, 1922) and Martha Seran Price (Apr 10, 1849 - FEb 9, 1929) and two of their children who died as infants: Ida May (Oct 9, 1869 - Aug 4, 1870 and Charles Benjamine (Mary 13, 1885 - Sep 24, 1887). Please note that birth years for Joseph and Martha are incorrect as engraved on this gravestone.
