Charles was born and raised in Butler County, Ohio. He married Adelia Maring in Oxford, Butler County, Ohio in 1858.

At the age of 27 he enlisted in the Civil War 35th Ohio Volunteer Inf.Co. B. with the rank of Pvt. He served from Oct 8, 1861 to Sept. 8, 1864.
He moved his family from Ohio between 1867 to 1873 to Casey, Illinois- following his parents and some of his siblings.

In the 1880 Federal Census- Casey, Illinois- he is listed as a plaster.
