Parents: James Williamson and Elizabeth ?

His parents were devout Methodists. Around age 17, Richard became a convert to Methodism. When Richard became 21, his father set him up in a mercantile business which became a success. However, fearing that his success would corrupt him, he closed the store 2 days a week; Wednesdays which were spent in prayerful study of the Bible and attending church on Sunday.

When he was around 24-25 years of age, he began preaching at which time he turned his business over to his father. Reading and Leeds were among other appointments where he preached one or two years each in the English Conference. He often stated one reason for his leaving the Mother Country was the Queen's nonrecognition of the petition sent her by the dissenting churches against their taxation for the support of the established Church.

He departed England, first destination was Toronto, Canada. From there he went to New York, then to Boston, thence to New Orleans.

He arrived in San Francisco early in 1854. That summer Rev. Williamson attended a Russian River camp meeting near where Healdsburg now stands where he met his future wife, Nancy Blaisdel Graves.

Together, they traveled through the interesting vicissitudes of a pioneer preacher's life about which long chapters could be written. He preached from three months to from four years in twenty different appointments in Calif., often in mining camps.

Williamson was sent up and down Northern California, spending only a year or two at one post before moving on to the next. Their nine children were born in different towns. Eventually the family settled near Sebastopol in Sonoma County. It had been a difficult life, beset with financial worries, but late in life, reflecting on their years together, the Williamsons agreed that God had been good to them."
