Based on enlistment, his service included the winter of 62-63 in garrison duty at Springfield,Mo. Springfield was attacked Jan 8 by Marmaduke's forces numbering abt 3000. The garrison consisted of the 18th, some Missouri militia, citizens and convalescents in hospital – approx. 1500 were able to hold their ground after an all day battle. The 18th stayed at Springfield about a year. In winter of 63-64, the 18th was assigned garrison duty at Ft Smith,Ark. The regiment was engaged in battle at Prairie d Ane, Moscow and Camden. The regiment continued garrison duty at Ft Smith until muster out alternating between starvation and plenty since river below them was blockaded thus the unit had to depend in large part on foraging .
