Lola Mae Malicoat Vandoski, 87, of Indianapolis, passed into the arms of Jesus, her Savior, on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove.

She was born April 11, 1922, in Tennessee and was the daughter of the late Earl and Sylvania Malicoat. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph E. Vandoski; and a son, Joseph E. Vandoski Jr.

She is survived by two children, Donald Vandoski (Nancy) and Carol Galyan (Mark), both of Greenwood; seven grandchildren, Adam Vandoski (Karen), Whitney and Paige Vandoski and Vince (Kati), Andrew, Natalie and Collin Campbell; five stepgrandchildren, Mark II, Jessika (Nathaniel), Matt, Julia and Lindsey; and two sisters, Mattie Cooper of Danville and Beulah Wilson of Greenwood.

Lola's was a life well-lived. After moving to Indiana as a young woman, she met the love of her life, Joseph Vandoski, at Bridgeport Brass, where she retired in 1983 after more than 30 years of service.
She and Joe were married May 7, 1944. She loved to tell the story explaining how poor they were when they married and that she was the one who paid their honeymoon hotel bill, which was all of $6 back then. They enjoyed long life and marriage together, celebrating their 50th anniversary with a recommitment ceremony at the church where they were married, Amo Baptist Church.

Her husband preceded her in death in 2004, just shy of 60 years of marriage. She often proclaimed, "I could've looked the whole world over and I would have never found a better husband than Joe." Their legacy of love and loyalty in marriage is a lasting gift cherished by her children and grandchildren.

Lola's love and devotion to her family were second to none, along with her strong work ethic and dedication to provide for her children. She and Joe proudly accomplished their goal of enabling their three children to graduate from college without student loan debt.

Lola and Joe kept busy throughout their grandparenting years, earning the title of No. 1 fans as they supported all their grandchildren's numerous athletic and musical events. Of course, they had a lot of practice having attended most, if not all, of their own children's athletic and musical events for many years.

They also earned the title "King and Queen of Euchre" from their immediate and extended family and were highly sought-after as euchre partners. They were involved in Thatcher Senior Citizens Euchre Club for many years, enjoying food and fellowship with dear friends.

Not only was Lola a fantastic cook but also famous for her Christmas candies, as she thrilled many people for decades when she came through the door carrying trays full of her delicious creations. She was generous at heart and lived her life giving in many ways to everyone she loved.

In her final years, she did not worry about running out of money to live on but rather sought ways to keep giving and giving.

Lola's son and daughter consider themselves privileged to have served her by being her primary caregivers these past six years. Her loving and gracious heart made it easy in their eyes to care for her. Her son also received an awesome blessing when he baptized Lola into Jesus Christ in February 2004.

Jesus said, "It is more blessed to give than receive." (Acts 20:35) Because she was a gracious receiver, her son and daughter have been given God's greater blessing.

A celebration of life service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at G.H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home, State Road 135 and Olive Branch. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time Sunday at the funeral home. The Rev. Spence Tuttle will officiate. She will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood.
