John was the son of Joel Knotts and 1st wife, Mary "Polly" Jones; a daughter of Jeremiah Jones and his wife Elizabeth Mercer for whom this cemetery is named.

He married Mary Jane Douglass on 22 Apr 1855 in Orangeburg County.

Seven children would be born to this union: John Milton, Mary Elizabeth, Ella Francis, Joseph Elvin, Laura Edora, William Arthur and Ann Eliza Knotts.

By trade, John was a school teacher, a profession he would hold for some 16-years. In addition, it is was described as a Baptist Minister as well as a surveyor.

He was believed to have been a brilliant man and in his later years, he wrote a book of poetry entitled: The Poetical Works of John Duren Knotts. This book can be found in the Orangeburg County Free Library.

He was 75-years of age.
