For many years he was a successful farmer of Red Bank township, Armstrong county, but during the latter years of his life he left the farm to live retired in Hawthorn.
The son of Jesse and Elizabeth (Mohney) Hepler, he was born in Limestone township, Clarion county, April 27, 1855. He grew to young manhood on the farm of his father and attended the public schools of his native township. He continued agriculture as his life's vocation and lived for many years on the farm known as the Raymond Hepler Homestead just South of Hawthorn.
March 20, 1877, he was united in marriage to Miss Agnes Stahlman, who died on December 16, 1923.
On December 24, 1924, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth (Beers) Bowersox, who survives.
To his first marrage nine chiildren were born, three sons and six daughters, two daughters having died in infancy. The surviving children are Ralph and Harry Hepler of Red Bank township, Armstrong county, Russell of Clarion; Mrs. Stanley M. Bowersox of near this place; Mrs. P.C. Morrison and Mrs. B.L. Brady of Hawthorn. In addition 27 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren survive.
Mr. Hepler was a member of the Hawthorn Evangelical church and of the Albright Brotherhood of that church. He was also a member of the West Millville Lodge No. 936, I.O.O.F., the members of that fraternity attending the funeral in a body, carrying out the ritualistic service of the order at the church and cemetery. Funeral services were held in his memory Sunday, December 22, at the Evangelical church in Hawthorn, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. M.D. Kelly, assisted by Rev. A.E. Masters, pastor of the Alcola Reformed church, of which the deceased was a former member and by Rev. C.C. Rich, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Clarion. Interment under the direction of H.H. Sloan of Hawthorn was made in the Alcola Reformed cemetery.
