Charles William BATSELL, Sr. (aka: W. C. or C. W. or Billy BATSELL) born August 23, 1839 in Green (now Taylor) county KY; died December 01, 1917 in Brownsville, Cameron county TX; buried December 03, 1917 in West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Grayson county TX. He was the son of James Madison BATSELL and Mary L. REYNOLDS, who both died in Whitewright and are buried at Batsell Cemetery (aka: Batsell Chapel Cemetery) next to Pitman's Chapel.

During his lifetime Charles William BATSELL, Sr. was a Livery Man, Merchant, Capitalist, Grocer, President of the Sherman City Street Railway Company (that ran the donkey pulled cars down the center of Travis Street), County Commissioner.

Charles William BATSELL, Sr. first married on April 22, 1863 in Grayson county TX to Elizabeth CLEMENT. She was the daughter of Bluford CLEMENT and Rebecca DAVENPORT. She was born March 20, 1845 in Pilot Grove, Grayson county TX; died January 18, 1879 in Sherman, Grayson county TX; buried January 18, 1879 in West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Grayson county TX.

They had three known children:

1. James Madison BATSELL born April 11, 1866 in Pilot Grove, Grayson county TX; died March 03, 1920 in Brownsville, Cameron county TX; buried March 06, 1920 in West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Grayson county TX. He married Fannie Lucia DODGE on January 05, 1888 in Sherman,
Grayson county TX.

2. Tom Annie BATSELL born Abt. July 28, 1868; died September 06, 1882 in Sherman, Grayson county TX; buried in West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Grayson county TX. She married P. W. DOLAN on May 05, 1880 in Sherman, Grayson county TX.

3. Charles William BATSELL, Jr. born January 25, 1869 in Pilot Grove, Grayson county TX; died May 03, 1936 at his home (now mine) 1511 South Travis, Sherman, Grayson county TX; buried May 05, 1936 in West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Grayson county TX. He married Estelle REEVES on February 05, 1890 in Sherman, Grayson county TX. She was the daughter of William A. REEVES and Louisa O. WILLIFORD.

Following the death of his first wife Charles William BATSELL, Sr. wed a second time to Rosa Florence THOMAS on December 31, 1879 in Barton county KS. Rosa was born Abt. September 12, 1855 in Covington, Kenton county KY died August 10, 1940 at the home of her daughter from her first marriage, May Merle TUTT (aka: Mae or May or Tillie BATSELL).

May was married twice first to Washington Lee WINSTEAD, later to Joseph Cartright RIGBY. May and her first husband were the parents of Charles Batsell WINSTEAD, the F.B.I. agent credited by J. Edgar Hoover for firing the fatal shot killing the notorious outlaw of the 1930s era - John Dillinger) and assisting in the capture of "Baby Face" Nelson.

Rosa was buried on August 11, 1940 in West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Grayson county TX. Her first husband was Montgomery Royston TUTT; their marriage ended in divorce.

BATSELL and THOMAS did not have any children.

During the Civil War Charles William BATSELL, Sr. served in CSA, 16th Cavalry Company G from Grayson county TX.
