He graduated from New Ross High School and from Purdue University with a civil engineering degree. He served two years with the Army National Guard.
Bruce was an engineer and surveyor for INDOT, building many of the bridges in the area with the construction of interstates 74, 65 and 70. He worked in the development department until he moved to the job of district construction director in 2003. He retired in February 2009.
He was a member of Robert Turner Post American Legion in New Ross, the New Ross Conservation Club, National Muzzle Loaders Association, American Flyer S Gauge Train Club, Putnam County Coin Club, Montgomery County Woodworkers and Carvers, and Boy Scout Troop 326. He enjoyed trap shooting.
