Gertrude Russell

Gertrude Ethel Russell, 97, died Saturday at Queen of the Valley Hospital.

She was born in Bonham, Texas, on May 8, 1895, and in 1912 she married Charley Martin Kephart in Geronimo, Okla. They moved to Superior, Ariz., in 1937 and Florence, Ariz., in 1940. In May, 1942 the family moved to Vallejo to work in the shipyard during World War II. She worked in Shop 51 at Mare Island until 1946. Mr. Kephart was killed in an auto accident in February that year, leaving her with the youngest of the nine children, two teenage sons, to raise.

Still living in Vallejo, she commuted by bus to Napa to work as a seamstress at Cameron Shirt Factory. In 1948 she moved to Richmond where she bought a home and owned and operated a cafeteria at the Richmond Shipyard with her daughter and son In-law. From 1949 to 1955, she commuted to San Francisco to work at Lynn DeVries' Dress Factory. She came to Napa in 1958 and, except for a brief time back in Richmond, she made her home here and supported herself by renting her Richmond home and babysitting.

She was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed making quilts for her family — she made her first quilt at the age of eight and her last one just a few months ago. She also loved crocheting and was an avid domino player. She was an excellent cook and liked entertaining in her home.

She married George Russell, a long-time friend, in 1979 when she was 84 and he was 96. They lived together at Napa Valley Mobile Home Park for eight years. He died in 1987 at the age of 104. She continued to live until 1990 when she went to live with her son and daughter in-law on Redwood Road in Napa.

She was a member of the Church of Christ on Orchard Avenue and attended services regularly until her recent illness.

She is survived two daughters, Verl Kephart Patterson of Turlock and Jerry Kephart Hench of St. Helena; and five sons: Paul Kephart of Middletown, Lee Kephart of Los Gatos, C.M. Kephart of Lawton, Okla., Hank Kephart of Clear Lake Oaks and Gaylen Kephart of Napa. She also leaves 20 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Earl and Delwood.

Friends are Invited to attend a memorial service Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ, 1138 Orchard Ave., Napa, with Mr. Wayne Plath officiating. Interment is private at St. Helena cemetery. Friends may call at Richard Pierce Funeral Service, 1660 Silverado Trail, today until 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
