James Carter married Nancy Wood in 1850. The Missouri, U.S., Marriage Records, 1805-2002, gave the marriage date as 04 May 1850 in Cass County, Missouri. The Declaration for Pension of Officer, Soldier or Sailor of Mexican War recorded the marriage date as 23 January 1850, near Pleasant Hill, Cass County, Missouri.

In the 1850 U.S. Census, James and Nancy were living in District 16, Cass County, Missouri. In 1870, James, Nancy, and their children were living in Jackson Township, Johnson County, Missouri. The family was living in Walker, Henry County, Missouri, in 1880 (U.S. Census Records).

In 1846, James served in Company B, of Captain Auguey's battalion in the Mexican War. In 1863, he briefly served as a guide for General Erwin, but he was released due to his health. James' service and pension were documented in his application for an invalid pension and Nancy's affidavit for a widow's pension. The pension documents show that James and Nancy were living in Johnstown, Bates County, Missouri, in the late 1880's.

• William F., b. about 1859 (U.S., Census); a William F. Carter is buried in same cemetery as James, birthdate on headstone is 1850 and death date is 1889; son of James and Nannie*
• Mary C., b. about 1862; d. before 1900*
• James Albert, b. 9 Apr 1865; d. 20 Sept 1946; m. 1st Katie Albert, 2nd Orlena M. Stockton
