Alfred Gray, father of the Gray boys, died at the home of his son Edward, near Rockville on Monday Feb. 6, 1911. He was born in Surry county, North Carolina, April 27, 1818 and at the time of his death was 92 years, 9 months and 9 days old. He was one of the oldest people in Sherman county. In his early manhood he moved to Tennessee and later to Nodaway county, Mo. In the summer of 1890 he came to Sherman county, where he has resided ever since. He was married to Mary Louise Chambers about the year 1836. To this union thirteen children were born. On Jan. 7, 1863 his wife died and later he was married to Mrs. Louisa Blackford. Later still he was married to Mrs. Catherine Steele. There are two children living from each of the later marriages. The funeral was held in the home by Rev. W. C. Harper, on Tuesday afternoon and the remains were laid to rest in Austin cemetery.

The Gray family was probably the most numerous of any family in Sherman County, Nebraska. William Gray, father of Alfred Gray, was probably born in Ireland and lived in North Carolina. Alfred Gray m. in 1836 near Nashville, Tenn. Eliza Chambers, dau. of William Chambers of Tenn. She was b. about 1820 near Jacksburg, Tenn., d. in Dec 1861, Nodaway Co., Mo., bur 12 mi NW Maryville, Mo., where family then lived.

He later moved to Sherman Co., Nebr. By Eliza Chambers he had eleven children named in order of birth: Martha, Nancy, Mary, Emily, Elizabeth, William, Andrew J., Martin, John, Kittie Ann, and Edmund F.

He married (2) Eliza Cooper and had three children: Alfred, Nellie and James. Alfred mar (3) Katie, widow of _______ Steele and had three children: Cora, Alfred Aldello and Delbert.
