Alexander was the son of Douthat L. Bailey and Bessie M. Walton. He married Etta Mae Doss.

BAILEY, ALEXANDER W., age 79, of Roanoke, died Saturday morning, November 9, 1991 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was born August 12, 1912 in Bluefield, W.Va. to Bessie M. and Douthat L. Bailey. At the age of five, Mr. Bailey's parents died, and he and his brother, Paul, were raised by their grandparents, Joseph E. and Sarah Walton. Upon the Waltons' deaths, Alex and Paul were raised by their aunt, Hazel D. Gordon, Roanoke. Mr. Bailey had been a resident of Roanoke since 1926 and had been retired from Norfolk & Western Railway for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Etta Mae Doss Bailey; his brother, Paul L. Bailey, Sr., Lynchburg. Mr. Bailey had no children, though he is survived by his niece, Mary Beth Foster, Lynchburg; his nephew, Paul L. Bailey, Jr., Cleveland, Tenn. He will be remembered for his infectious laugh, his honesty, and his willingness to help others. The family will receive friends at Lotz Salem Chapel in Salem, Sunday evening. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Lotz Salem Chapel at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 11, 1991, with interment at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
