James enlisted as a Pvt in Co A, 1st LA Infantry, Strawbridge's unit, on 17 April 1861 at New Orleans, LA. He served at Warrington, FL, Duvant, MS, and Rome GA. He was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. He was later promoted to Sgt of Co F, 1st LA Infantry, and retired on 9 Aug 1864.

Jim Plumer died at his home on Friday morning and was buried in the Horton Graveyard near Rover on Saturday.
