Thomas Montgomery was civil war veteran
After a long illness, Thomas Montgomery died at his home, 40 Hampshire St early Friday morning, March 11. He was born in Portland ME, April 5, 1838 but his family moved to this city when he was three years old. In 1864 he enlisted in the 14th MA Light Battery and served until the end of the civil war, although he was severely wounded at Petersburg. He was discharged from the service with rank of corporal. When the GAR was organized he joined P Stearns Davis Post 57, of East Cambridge, but transferred to Wm H Smart post 30, in 1875, and has been an active member in the organization since, having served as senior vice commander, and for 15 years he held the office of department aide. He was always in close touch with municipal affairs, having been employed by the city in the lamp dept for over 40 years. He was a member of the 14th Battery association, Everett commandery, Knights of Malta, and Wm H Smart post 30 of the GAR. He is survived by four sons Thomas A and Wm H of New Bedford, Howard M of Quincy, and Charles A of this city; also by one daughter, Mrs. Charlotte J Coolidge of this city. Funeral services were held at his residence Sunday March 13, at 1:30. Rev Wm D Goble of the First Baptist Church officiating. Miss Eunice H Pattee of tent 4, DUVCW was the soloist. Officers of post 30 GAR conducted the Grand Army funeral service. The following members of camp 14, SUVCW acted as pallbearers: Joseph H Montgomery, Howard A Coolidge grandsons of the deceased, and J Lester Hill, Joseph N Gilman, Gerald Erickson and Peter P Durnan. Four members of post 30, two members of post 56, 21 members of camp 14 and a large number of relatives and friends attended. Burial was in Cambridge Cemetery.
