Britney Kathleen Gengel, 19, of Watson Lane in Rutland, passed away in the Hotel Montana, Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Britney was a sophomore at Lynn University, Boca Raton Campus in Florida, studying Communications. She was a 2008 graduate of Wachusett Regional High School where she was a member of DECA, Best Buddies and played JV Softball. She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Leonard F. and Cherylann E. (DiCicco) Gengel. She is also survived by her two brothers at home, Bernard S. and Richard J. Gengel; her maternal grandmother, Kathleen (Viens) DiCicco of Rutland; aunts and uncles, Jodi and John Sweeney, Catherine Gengel , Christine Steinwand and JoAnne Shatkin, Ruth and Steve Penka, Joan Gengel-Pentland, Sue and Jerry Kusy, Stephen and Linda Gengel, Carol Gengel and John "Cass" Cassidy; her Godfather, Robert "Buck" Anderson of Rutland; and 11 cousins who were like her brothers and sisters. Her maternal grandfather, Richard A. DiCicco and her paternal grandparents, Bernard S. and Winifred C. (Fleming) Gengel, predeceased her. She was a member of St. John's Church in Worcester.

Britney was 19-years-old student of Lynn University who was in Haiti to help feed the poor. Britney was about to turn 20-years-old.
Britney was reported missing when an earthquake struck Haiti on January 12, 2010. Britney was one of four Lynn University students and two professors who were killed when their hotel collapsed in Port-au-Prince on Jan. 12.
The group was on a mission trip with Food for the Poor at the time of the earthquake.
Sunday, February 14, 2010, Britney's body was recovered.
