Mary Alice Merritt was born in Boone County, Indiana, Jan. 4, 1858, and departed this life May 9, 1917, aged 59 yrs. 4 mo. and 5 days.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Spicklemier.

She was married to James H. Merritt April 5, 1876.

Six children were born to them, five of whom still survive her, Oliver, Oran, Nellie Eggers, Nora Ragan, Ethel, and John D. Merritt and a stepson.

Two brothers and two sisters also survive her, John, Thomas, Mrs. Maggie Pease and Mrs. C. M. Nichole.

Soon after the death of her husband occurred, Sept. 10, 1911, she was stricken with paralysis from which she never fully recovered and the fatal stroke came Wed. morning about 8 o'clock in Indianapolis where she and her daughter Ethel had gone to do some shopping.

She was taken to the home of her brother, John W. Spicklemier, on North Capitol Ave., where she passed away at 2 p.m.

She joined the regular Baptist church at Abner's creek soon after their marriage. She was loyal to her church always attending services when she was physically able and gave liberally of her means to its support. She was a kind and affectionate mother and a good neighbor.
