Donald C. Buback, founder and retired president of D.C. Buback Meat Co. in Des Peres, died Oct. 28, 2003, of cancer at his home in Kirkwood. He was 68. Born in St. Louis, Mr. Buback earned bachelor's and master's degrees in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

Mr. Buback worked in sales for Wilson Packing Co. in Kansas City and Chicago. He later joined Agar Packing Co. in Chicago. Mr. Buback returned to the St. Louis area in the late 1970s to found D.C. Buback Meat Co. in Des Peres. He served as president and owner of the wholesale meat company until he retired and closed the business in the early 1980s. Mr. Buback volunteered at the James S. McDonnell USO at Lambert Field for more than 10 years. He also volunteered as a communion minister at Bethesda Dilworth Memorial Home in Kirkwood. In his later years, Mr. Buback assisted elderly people in his community by driving them to doctor appointments and groceries and helping them care for their homes and gardens.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 243 West Argonne Drive, Kirkwood. A gathering for friends and family will take place at the church before the Mass. Mr. Buback donated his body to the St. Louis University School of Medicine.

Among the survivors are his wife of 46 years, Mary Riley Buback of Kirkwood; four sons, Dan Buback of St. Charles, Joe Keel of Billings, Mont., Pete Buback of Chesterfield and Tim Buback of Appleton, Wis.; a sister, Audrey Flavin of Des Peres; 11 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
