Much has been written about Jeremiah Meacham's murder of his wife and sister-in-law on the evening of 22 Mar 1714/5 in Newport, Rhode Island and his subsequent hanging. However, the names of the victims are often confused. Court records show that his wife was Patience Meacham and her sister Content Garsey. Both women appear to have been daughters of Maj John Bliss and his wife Demaris Arnold, based on guardianship and probate records.

on page 370 is three short paragraphs about Jeremiah Meacham

Here is what it says --

"Meachem, Jeremiah
Murderer (? - 1715)
On the morning of March 22, 1715, Jeremiah Meacham climbed to the roof of his house outside of Newport, R.I. for no apparent reason. He sat there for several hours brooding while his family - his wife and her sister - [Freelove and Marcy] begged him to come down.
Suddenly, Meachem, who had no history of violence, jumped from the roof and killed both women with an axe. He tossed their bodies into the house and set it on fire.
Meacham was hanged at Newport, April 12, 1715."
