Son of James William Sr. & Lavina (Brown) Washburn, who were married 18 Feb 1841, St. Martins, St. John, New Brunswick Colony (later Canada).

James, Mary and Theodore Washburn came west to Colorado in c. 1880, initially shown in the little goldstrike town of St. Elmo, Chaffee County, Colorado, where their daughter Jennie (Jennifer?) Willietta Washburn is born in April 1881. According to family historian (her Aunt). Julia Becker, she died in infancy. Possibly because of this trauma, or for other reason's (we really do not know if they were there for the gold, or if it just happened that they were there, at that point in their journey, when Jennie was born), they apparently continued west, eventually settling in San Miguel County. By 1900, their oldest son Theodore had moved south to Arizona and after 1910, James and Mary followed, settling in Mesa, Maricopa County.

James died 17 April 1924 in Mesa. His death certificate shows he had a heart attack while "cranking his automobile".
