Kirby Call McGary was born on 20 January 1903 in Beaumont, Texas, to Samuel Hopkins McGary and Cornelia Ligon. His father, who was owner and editor of The Beaumont Journal, died when he was five years old. Afterwards, his mother left town with him. Kirby worked as a carnival barker during the Great Depression. He died a bachelor, 28 July 1973, aged 70, and was buried at Sion Presbyterian Cemetery in Winnsboro, South Carolina.
