LAGRANGE -- Gloria Ann Burkey, 69, of 1415 S. 460 E., died at 6:20 p.m. Monday (Feb. 19, 2007) in Elkhart General Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 18, 1937, in Goshen to William and Lela Belle (Snodgrass) Hartman. On May 3, 1956, in Mississippi, she married Ralph Edward Burkey. He died Sept. 3, 1980.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann (Jeff) Grate of Bronson, Mich.; five sons, Daniel (Erin) Burkey of Granger, Stephen (Lisa) Burkey of Howe, Jonathan (Twyla) Burkey of Lima, Ohio, David (Juanita) Burkey of Hamilton and Peter Burkey of LaGrange; 19 grandchildren; two sisters, Wanda (Robert) Hooley of California Corners, Mich., and Carol (Roy) Parker of Elkhart; and one brother, Jim (Betty) Hartman of Union, Mich.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lela; and one grandson, Reuben Paul Grate.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury, and one hour prior to the 10 a.m. Friday funeral service at Shore Mennonite Church, 7235 W. U.S. 20, Shipshewana. Pastor Mike Cain and the Rev. Bob Renner will officiate. Burial will be in Shore Cemetery, Shipshewana.
Mrs. Burkey was a member of the Lake Missionary Church, where she served as children's director. She served several years as the Bible Release Teacher through the Steuben County Association of Churches and over the years she had served as a Sunday school teacher/superintendent, children's and VBS director, curriculum writer and women's Bible study leader. From 1996 to 2000, she served as a missionary in Donesk, Ukraine, working with university students and helping them start and develop Hope Church.
Mrs. Burkey worked for 26 years at CTS of Elkhart and for a number of years at A.R.C. Opportunities of Howe. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing Scrabble, playing piano and sharing Christ with others. She enjoyed being a mother and grandmother.
