Chuck was born September 25, 1919 in Huntington to Horace and Viva Marie (Ballard) Grimes. He joined the United States Army and served in Sicily, Naples, Foggia, Rome – Arno, Rhineland, and Southern France during World War II. Chuck married Betty Jane Baker on May 17, 1946 in Huntington.

Chuck was a commercial carpenter in northeastern Indiana for most of his working life. He was a retired lifetime member of the Carpenters Union #232 after over 50 years of membership. He was also a member of the St. Peter's First Community Church, lifetime member and past commander of the American Legion Post #7, past 5th District commander and past Northern Vice Commander of the State of Indiana, past baseball coach with the American Legion 1954 – 1963, and Chef DeGar of the 40 & 8.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Betty Jane (Baker) Grimes of Huntington, and several nephews and nieces. His parents, five brothers – Robert Grimes, John Grimes, Kenny Grimes, Horace Grimes, Jr., and Bobby Grimes, and two sisters – Helen Oswalt and Dorothy Tumbleson, precede him in death.
