Marvin W. Balhorn
Marvin W. Balhorn, 84, of 5919 Purple Dr. NE, formerly a longtime resident of Marion, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006, in Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Iowa City, after a long illness. Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, where friends may call after noon on Tuesday. Entombment, with military rites: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Per Marvin's request, the casket will be closed at all times. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include two sons, Rod and his wife, Monique, and Mike and his wife, Rita, all of Livermore Calif.; a daughter, Rita Merta and her I husband, Allen, of Cedar Rapids; three sisters, Carol (Paul) Christoffersen of California, Velva (Bob) Destival of Waterloo and Glenda Corneli of Georgia. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Lisa, Brian and Matt; and five greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and sisters. Marvin was born Jan. 28, 1922, in Benton County, the son of William and Antoinette Al-bertsen Balhorn. He married Alene Myers on May 22, 1946, in Anamosa. She died Feb. 2, 2006. Marvin retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service. During World War II he was captured on Wake Island by the Japanese and was a POW for 3 years, 8 months. He worked at Rockwell Collins in the engineering department, retiring from there after 24 years of service in 1983. He was a member of the Hawkeye Branch No. 216 Fleet Reserve Association and Hawkeye Ex POW Chapter. Memorial donations may be given to the Alzheimer's Foundation in Marvin's name. Military rites provided by VFW Post 788.
