Information taken from "Indiana, Marriage Index, 1800-1941," database https://www.ancestry.ca, shows P.D. MacGregor married Jennie L. Alger on 23 December 1890 in La Porte County, Indiana, U.S.A.

Jennie L. Alger was born in Conesus, Conesus Center, Livingston County, New York in December 1860. Her parents were James Dewitt Alger (1836-1885) and Anna M. Titsworth (1839-1890), according to information found at https://www.ancestry.ca.

Information taken from the "1900 United States Federal Census," database https://www.ancestry.ca, shows Jennie L. MacGregor, 39 years old, widow, born December 1860, a dressmaker by occupation, living in San Francisco, California, U.S.A. with her three children: Wallace MacGregor, 5 years old, born in California in October 1894; Ethel [DeEtta] MacGregor, 3 years old, born in California in September 1896; Grace MacGregor, 2 years old, born in California in March 1898.

Correction: A number of documents point to the fact that Ethel [DeEtta] MacGregor was born in Michigan, not California as shown on the "1900 United States Federal Census." For example: The "1930 United States Federal Census," database https://www.ancestry.ca, lists Ethel M. MacGregor, age 34, living with her husband, Frederick Barney and mother Jennie MacGregor, in Rochester, New York, as being born in Michigan.

There is no mention of P.D. MacGregor living with this family in the census record. It is true that Jennie is identified as being a widow in this document. One might rightly assume that she is listed as a widow because her husband, P.D. MacGregor, had died since she married him back in Indiana in December 1890. However, what could also be true is that P.D. MacGregor deserted his family around 1898, the year his last child, Grace, was born. This possibility is supported by a document showing that Jennie was granted a divorce by the Secretary of State for Michigan from Peter D. McGregor on 16 January 1905.

This divorce document, taken from "Michigan, U.S., Divorce Records, 1897-1952," database https://www.ancestry.ca, shows Jennie L. McGregor, married on 25 December 1890 to Peter D. MacGregor in Hanna, Indiana, applied for a divorce from him on 9 September 1904 and was granted an absolute uncontested divorce, based on cruelty, on 16 January 1905.

Why would Jennie apply for a divorce from her husband if she already knew he had died? She would not have done so. It is clear, therefore, that she applied for a divorce from him because he had abandoned her and his three children and it was clear to her that he would not be returning.

Jennie moved back home to Rochester, New York at some point before 1920, since information from the "1920 U.S. Federal census," database https://www.ancestry.ca shows Jennie MacGregor, 60 years old, widowed, born in New York State, living in a house on South Goodman Street in Rochester, Monroe County, New York with two other seniors. Jennie's occupation is listed as a nurse/companion, working for wages or a salary.

Information taken from the "1930 United States Federal Census," database https://www.ancestry.ca, shows Jennie L. MacGregor, 69 years old, widowed, living at 96 Stratford Park in Rochester, New York. Residing with her at this address is her daughter, Ethel M. [MacGregor] Barney, 34 years old and her daughter's husband, Frederick H. Barney, 34, listed as the head of household.

Ethel DeEtta MacGregor Barney has Find A Grave Memorial #225815260.
