Bernice Sprain

Abilene - Bernice Sprain, long time former Abilene resident, died Feb.9, 2010, at Medical City Hospital in Dallas at the age of 94.

Born Dec. 5, 1915, in Burleson, TX, to the Rev. John Franklin and Sidney Chester Adams, she attended schools in towns throughout the Central Texas conference of First United Methodist Church where her father served in fourteen churches in his forty-year career.

She graduated from Italy High School, Italy, TX, where she was a memeber of the district chapion girls' basketball team. Donations from several church members enabled her to attend North Texas State Teachers College (now University of North Texas) in Denton where she graduated in three years in 1938 with a Bachelor of Science degree in geography and minor in art. She accepted a teaching position with Bellville Elementary School, Bellville, TX, as a second grade teacher.

In 1939, she married Marvin Sprain who was beginning law practice after graduating from UT Law School. They lived in Dallas in University Park for nine years before moving to Abilene in 1950.

In Abilene, Bernice was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Abilene Country Club and the Ladies Golf Association. The Abilene Club, and Pierian and Pensadores Study Clubs. She moved to Carrolton, TX in 1996.

She is pre-deceased by her parents; sisters Lyndell Tunnell of Van and Ruth Miles, Corsicana; brothers, Ira (Lee) Adams of California and Hal W. Adams, Dallas; and grandson Patrick Sprain Gerald of Midland.

Survivors include a daughter LIVING, granddaughter LIVING, great-grandson LIVING, and great-granddaughter LIVING; and great-granddaughters LIVING. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, February 14, 2010, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas with burial at Oakwood Cemetery, Corsicana, TX.
