He was proud to receive the Million Mile award several times during his 33 years as a truck driver for Yellow Transit, driving millions of accident-free miles.
Born December 8, 1921 in Oklahoma City, he was the eighth and last child of Philow and Sarah Gravitt.
He and Susie Ellen Abbitt married June 3, 1939, and raised three children, Jimmy Eugene Gravitt, TyWanna Gravitt Everhart, and Jeannie Van Nest. The Marshall Gravitt clan grew to include grandchildren Jimmy, Jerry, Mark, Marcella, Scott, Wendy and Trisha, 15 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
He survived the Great Depression, WWII combat as a Marine rifleman in the Pacific Arena, triple bypass surgery in 1986, and the loss of his sweetheart Susie, wife of 68 years in 2007.
He was a tough old bird. At age 88, he was the last man standing. He had a great sense of community and responsibility, driving neighborhood children to school, volunteering at the local hospital, giving rides to the widows to church, and leading projects as a 32nd degree Mason when younger. He was the example for all men, and will not be forgotten by the many who respected and loved him. They'll remember the serious manner he flew his U.S. flag on holidays, his immaculate yard and flower garden, the jaunty way he rolled his ankle socks, his stacks of Western paperbacks with rubber bands as bookmarks - in short his love for God, country, and family.
Services held Friday, February 12, 2010 at South Lindsay Baptist Church.
