Alva, born in Mississippi, enlisted in Company K, Alabama 41st Infantry Regiment and Mustered out on 09 Apr 1865 at Appomattox, VA.
On 9 Apr 1872 in Goliad, Texas Alva married Callie Word. By 1880 Alva was widowed with two young sons. He would later relocate to El Paso, Texas where by the mid 1890s he was the proprietor of the Oxford Saloon at 302 San Antonio, El Paso, Texas.

There is no resort in El Paso more
worthy of mention in this renew, than
the Oxford on San Antonio street near
Utah. The quarters occupied are most
admirably appointed. In the front is
the bar, which is furnished with hand-
some fixtures. Here is dispensed the
finest imported and domestic wines,
liquors, beer, cigars and all the pop-
ular mixed drinks. In the rear are
several nicely furnished rooms for fami-
ly and party use. There is also a fine
billard table in the rear. Mr. Alva
Richey, the proprietor is very popular
in El Paso. He has lived here a num-
ber of years and is esteemed by all who
know him.
