Graveside services for John H. Key, 92, resident of Stephens County, Texas since 1873 were held at South Prairie cemetery, two miles north of Ivan. Mayor A.J. Morgan officiating the services.

Sarah Johnson married John Key in 1886 at Stephens County, Texas.

Mr. Key died at the home of his nephew, T.C. Hefner, near Crystal Falls.

John H. Key was a Confederate Veteran.

Survived by two sons - J.P. Key of Mineral Wells and H.V. Key of Crystal Falls; his nephew - T.C. Hefner of Crystal Falls.

John Henry Key filed for his Confederate pension at Nolan County, Texas. He stated that he was disbanded at Alexandria, Louisiana at the close of the War. He filed for his pension at the age of 74 years on 15 April 1917. His address was Sweetwater, Texas. Key was drawing his pension on account of stomach trouble and rheumatism. He enlisted in the Fall of 1861 and served 3-1/2 years until the close of the War. He was a Private in Company E, 5th Louisiana Cavalry, Coopers Regiment. He stated he was never transferred and stayed in the same Company. Key states that he was never a commissioned officer. Witnesses to the fact of his service were signed by A. Hefner and F.M. Hefner. Civil War records show that John H. Key, was a Private in Company F, 13th Battalion Lousiana Partisan Rangers, Confederate Service of America, also known as Company E. He entered 15 August 1862 and on the roll 1 January to 30 April 1863. The last one on file. He was absent without leave. It is believed that 5th Louisiana Cavalry was formed from the men of the 13th Battalion Louisiana Partisan Rangers. It was not found as Cooper's Regiment. /s/ H.T.
