Gurney, who was ill for some time, died the 3 March,after a three month stay in the Veterans Hospital in Knoxville. He and his wife had resided in Bayard for some years. He was 83 years old when he died. Gurney was born to Frank and Rhoda (Knight) Trucks, in Carroll County, Iowa. He served in World War I. He homesteaded in Montana, and later came home to Iowa. He married Hazel on
4 March, 1925. His wife and five children survive him. Gurney and Hazel relocated from Coon Rapids, to Bayard when Gurney retired.
Gurney's obituary ran in The Bayard News on March 10, 1977.
