When Merrill was 12, he, his father and the hired man were on a hay wagon when they saw some baby quail. The others jumped off the wagon to get the quail, leaving Merrill holding the reins. The quail flew up and spooked the horses. Merrill fell off the wagon, broke his neck and was dragged for about a mile.
