"Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Colbert S. Cartwright were held Monday afternoon at the Williams Funeral Home in Canfield for Major Ellis D. McCartney, 49, who died suddenly of an acute myocardial infection in the Orleans Military Hospital on Oct. 24. He had been stationed in France the past two years. Born in Canfield, Dec. 19, 1915, he was a son of LeRoy and Anna Powers McCartney, and his early life was spent in the village. For a time he was engaged in the contracting business in Orlando, Fla. And enlisted in the Army in 1942. He served in Europe during World War II and in Korea, and afterwards was stationed at several Army installations in the United States. He was assigned as executive officer of the 553rd Engineer Battalion in Orleans. Major McCartney was the recipient of sixteen citations for combat and service. Besides his wife, the former Emma Jane Cartwright, whom he married in 1940, he leaves two sons, Dennis, who had been with his parents, and Kelley, stationed with the Army in West Berlin, Germany; three sisters, Mrs. Herb Johnson, Mrs. Leonard Hult and Mrs. Benjamin Brown, all of Cleveland; and two brothers, Arliss of Hollywood, Fla., and Richard of Arizona. Interment was made in the Canfield cemetery."
