Ellen was born of Irish parents in Clearfiled, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. She was married to James Henry when she was just 16 years old. He is not easy to find in records but based on the few that do exist he was about 28 years old. There may have been other children who died but there are no records before the birth of daughter Elizabeth in 1861 some six years later. Ellen married again in February 1864 to George Holl so James died sometime before that. Her son John, was born in August 1864 so he may have been James' son. Both children were given George's name and raised as the couple's children. In the 1900 census Ellen indicates she had 11 children. There is evidence of two children born to her and George who died as infants. That means there were two other children born most likely to her and James Henry who died as infants. In her declining years Ellen and George lived with their daughter and son-in-law, Nellie and Charles Popp. She died in 1902 of cirrhosis of the liver and endocarditis.
