Harold E. Becker, 81, of Atchison, KS, formerly of Palmyra, MO, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at his son's home in Atchison.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, February 8, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church in Palmyra, MO, with the Rev. David Johnson, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Palmyra. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, Friday, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison and also from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, Sunday, at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. Memorial contributions in memory of Harold are suggested to the Boy Scouts of America Wagon Wheel Campership Fund, Trinity Lutheran Church Endowment, Atchison or Zion Lutheran Church, Palmyra. Harold was born on August 3, 1928 in Sweet Springs, MO, the son of Rev. A.J. and Bertha (Wiebusch) Becker. He attended schools in Sweet Springs, MO, Slater, MO, Concordia, MO and graduated from Palmyra High School in 1946. He went to work for the Robey-Robinson Lumber Yard in Palmyra prior to entering the military. He served overseas in the US Army Field Artillery during the Korean War from February 1951 until November 1952. When Harold returned from military duty, he again worked for the lumberyard until he began working for, and eventually managed, the Ben Franklin Store in Palmyra. He left there and worked as an Assistant Manager for the Quincy (IL) Farm and Home Supply for over 20 years.

In 1986, Harold and his wife, JoAnne, moved to Atchison and he worked with his sons at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. After Harold retired, they moved back to Palmyra in 1996 where he worked part-time for Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel. Harold and JoAnne have been living the past two years in Atchison with their son, Bryan.

Harold was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Boots-Dickson American Legion Post and the Norfolk-Smith VFW Post # 11041, all of Palmyra. He had been a former member of the Lutheran Laymen's League at Zion and a bowling league secretary for over 10 years. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, growing tomatoes, watching the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball team and especially his grandchildren. Harold was looking forward to welcoming his first great-grandchild this coming May.

Harold was married to JoAnne Sutton on December 16, 1950 at Zion Lutheran Church. She survives of the home in Atchison. Additional survivors include three sons; David & Maureen Smallwood Becker, St. Louis, MO, Bryan & Pattie Becker, Atchison, KS, and Paul and Tonya Becker, Nortonville, KS; three sisters, Norma Schade, Palmyra, MO, Carolyn (Marvin) Myers, Hannibal, MO, and Emily Becker, Quincy, Il; six grandchildren, Christina (Aidan) Dunleavy, Omaha, NE, Tim (Sara) Becker, Effingham, KS, Matt (fiancé Shannon Johnson) Becker, Manhattan, KS, Andrew Becker, Nortonville, Rachel Allen and Kelly Carnal, both of St. Louis; two nieces, Joy (Rodney) Williams and Nancy (Jim) Schaefer, both of Palmyra; one nephew, Denny (Judy) Myers, Palmyra.

His parents, Rev. A.J. and Bertha Becker; an infant daughter, Beverly Becker; and a brother-in-law, Robert Schade, all preceded him in death.
