STATE'S FIRST LIVER TRANSPLANT PATIENT DIES SATURDAY AT 58
Joseph Stanley Ballard, 58, the first person in Kentucky to have a liver transplant, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, at his home in Loretto. He received the liver and a kidney on May 21, 1990, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. Ballard, 58, Loretto, died at 12:25 a.m., Jan. 24, 1998 at his residence. Born Sept. 16, 1939, in Louisville, he was a retired employee of General Electric Company in Louisville and a United States Army Veteran. He was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Lynn Ballard, on March 7, 1981, and his father, Thomas Estel Ballard, on Sept. 10, 1978. Survivors include: his wife, Mary Ann Miles Ballard, his mother, Mary Earnett Ballard of Loretto; two daughters, Mrs. Bernie (Lynn) Fenwick of Lebanon and Mrs. Brad (Donna) Fogle of Loretto; four sons, Jeff of Atlanta, Ga., and Jerry, Doug and Jason Ballard, all of Louisville; one sister, Mrs. Johnny (Bonnie Sue) Blair of New Hope; three brothers, Randall of Bardstown, Mike of Louisville and Dan Ballard of New Hope; and six grandchildren. Funeral Mass was at 10:30 a.m., Jan. 26, 1998, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. Chief celebrant was Rev. James A. Covert. Rev. Kevin J. Bryan con-celebrated. Active pallbearers were Carter Willet, Freddie Simms, Gerald Fogle, John Donnelly, Bobby Miles and Tommy Donahue. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Bickett, Joe Mattingly, David Bickett and David Hall. His wife's co-workers from Maker's Mark Distillery formed an honor guard for the services. Prayers were at 7 p.m., Jan. 25, at Mattingly Funeral Home, Loretto, which was in charge of the arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Kentucky Organ Donors Affiliates, 305 West Broadway, Louisville.
