Victor P. Arena, 91, of Scranton, died Tuesday at the Gino Merli Veterans Center, Scranton. His wife of 67 years is the former Lenore Setzer.

Born in Corbin, Ky., son of the late James and Martha Mitchell Arena, he was educated at St. Camillus Academy and the public schools in Corbin and also attended the University of Scranton. Victor was employed as a draftsman by the Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C., until he entered the Army in 1943. He participated in the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach, Normandy, and also served in Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Army Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Services Medal, European-African Medal and Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars and one Arrowhead. Most recently, he received the Medal of the Jubilee of Liberty by the governor of the Normandy Regions in observance of the 50th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. After leaving the service, Victor returned to Washington but was later transferred to the Veterans Administration office in Wilkes-Barre and then to the Scranton office. He also worked at Daystrom Instruments, Archbald, and finally at Tobyhanna Army Depot as a systems analyst until his retirement. He then briefly worked at the state Department of Transportation and the state employment office.

He was a member of St. Clare's Church and a former member of its All Seasons Club, where he was an organizer and trip coordinator who ran many memorable trips. He was also a member of the East Scranton VFW, Scranton Shade Tree Commission, president of the William Prescott PTA, a member of the Hill Neighborhood Association, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees, Greek Catholic Union, Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and a longtime member of Elmhurst Country Club. He was also active in the East Scranton Little League and Boy Scouts at Immaculate Conception Church. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed working outdoors. He loved children and all animals.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mary Elizabeth Savary and husband, Alexander, Tampa, Fla.; Constance Gentile and husband, Joseph, Dunmore; and Nancy Gibbons and husband, Michael, Scranton; a son, James, Webster, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren, Susan Breidinger and husband, Terry; Alex Savary and wife, Mary; Maria Dotter and husband, William; Catherine Kurilla and husband, Brian; Matthew Gentile; Wendy Green and husband, Martin; Michael and Rachel Gibbons, Ashley Arena, Lauren and Kyle Arena; five great-grandchildren, Noah and Luke Breidinger, Morgan and Sarah Savary and Martin Green; a brother, Paul, Corbin; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Elizabeth Steele, Irene Ferroni, Virginia Borror and Marietta Hayden; three brothers, James Arena Jr., and infants Joseph and Jerome; and a daughter-in-law, Susan Schirra Arena, who died in May.

The family would like to thank the staff at Green Ridge Health Care and the Gino Merli Veterans center, especially the staff on the third floor North.

The funeral will be Saturday from the Thomas J. Golden Funeral Home, 2004 Delaware St., Dunmore, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Clare's Church, North Washington Avenue, Scranton. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

Friends may call Friday, 4 to 7 p.m.
